POWER NETWORKING

Actors don't perform in front of an audience without first preparing for the big event, so why do most people think they can conduct successful job searches without giving serious thought about what they are going to say about themselves and who they are going to say it to? Well, if you've made it this far, you understand that successful careers and job search campaigns take planning.

You have mastered the following steps to get to this point:

  • You know your strengths and the jobs that best fit you. (Step 1)
  • You've developed an effective job search/career development plan. (Step 2)
  • You know what to put in your resume to get an employer's attention. (Step 3)
  • You know how to encourage others to help you find a job. (Step 4)

Now it's rehearsal time. You need to create opportunities to practice your presentation in front of others, so they will know what you're looking for and may introduce you to their contacts. Now is the time to create a plan for you and your ever-growing supporting cast to connect with others, tell them about you and what you have to offer, and teach them how to send their contacts your way.

Rehearsal time means making sure that the following things are in place:

1. The set - venues that allow you to meet people from different professional and cultural backgrounds.

2. The proper wardrobe
- attire that represents the image you want to project. Look the part!

3. Your script
- what you will say to others that will engage them and encourage them to help.

4. Your props - your resume, business card and other promotional items.

Everything you do, say, or give to someone reflects the image you want to project.
