GETTING HELP WITH YOUR JOB SEARCH
If you've gotten to this point, you now know what it takes to set the stage for
your successful job search. Before continuing, make sure you have reviewed and
accomplished the following important steps:

- You know your strengths and the jobs that best fit you. (Step 1)
- You've developed an effective job search/career development plan. (Step 2)
- You know what to put in your resume to get an employer's attention. (Step 3)
So, now that you have clarified your career goals and how to attract the best
types of jobs for you, how do you leverage this knowledge? There are only 24
hours in a day, which means you have to use your time wisely. The more people
you can enlist to help you, the more you can multiply your efforts and identify
countless potential job leads. And the most comfortable way to build your
supporting cast is to start with the people closest to you and branch out to
those you meet on a daily basis.

Who can help find great job leads for you? Just for starters, how
about:
ACQUAINTANCES
- Friends
- Relatives
- Neighbors
- Past employers
- Co-workers (present and past)
- Vendors
- People who have recently found new jobs
- Anyone you meet!
GROUPS
- Church
- Professional associations
- Community associations
- Job clubs (like ours!)
- Business-building networks
- Social events that interest you
See how it works? The people you know, know other people, who, you guessed
it, know even more people. Moreover, people generally want to help you, but just
don't know how they can help.
In order for other people to help you, here are some things they need to know
about you:
1. The type of job that interests you.
2. How to
communicate your skills and accomplisments to others.
3. How to
facilitate a meeting between you and an interested party.
4. How
to coach their contacts, so they know how to help you, as well.
So, how many of your friends and family really know about your skills and
career goals? Why don't they know? Well, now is the time to put the word out!
The more they know about your goals and how they can help you reach them, the
more effective they will be when telling others about you!
