How to Select the Right Career Coach

The things I personally feel are most important when selecting a career coach are: credibility, industry experience and, quite frankly, a good rapport.

You want to work with someone you can trust, who actually has the coaching skills and business savvy to help you deal with the issues you are facing. Pay attention to that "gut feeling" you will have when you speak to a prospective coach, either on the phone or in person.

Also consider that the coaching relationship may last for several months, so make sure this is someone you won't mind dealing with on a regular basis and for quite some time. Give some thought to the specific issues that you are dealing with and use them as guidelines when you call or meet personally with a prospective coach. Throw a few issues at them and see how they respond.

But, most importantly, guard your wallet! There are firms that will promise you the moon, for an up-front fee with several commas in it! I would recommend going with coaches that can give you specific information about what to expect during each coaching session and any related fees. I charge on a "per session" basis (from $175 to $250 per session, with each session lasting between 1 and 1 ½ hours), but will 'package' services to clients who have specific needs. I also like to set up an initial complimentary meeting that lasts for 30 to 45 minutes, so we can get to know one another and I can get specific information about your needs and how I may be of service.

Here are a few links to articles that I think give very good advice on selecting the right career coach for you.:
